Helmed by Matthew Diamond, a former choreographer, pic reps one of the most scrupulous records of the ballet world ever committed to film, with the same time given to Taylor’s slippery thinking and background as to nuts and bolts of the craft itself. Making fest rounds before inevitable pubcasting berths, “Dancemaker” is worth pitching to same specialized theatrical auds that made “Unzipped” a rare behind- the- scenes hit. While Taylor doesn’t have the mainstream cachet of an Alvin Ailey or Rudolf Nureyev, he’s been a legendary figure among balletomanes for more than 4. He’s obviously a bear to work for, although you’d never know it from the genteel face he offers the lens. Forever chewing gum and deprecating himself, he seems the very soul of Midwestern plainness. In scene after scene with company members warming up, rehearsing and chatting offstage (often while smoking), it’s apparent that they’re hooked on his unique vision, which — hardships aside — allows an unusual amount of creative input from the performers. Taylor’s concepts, despite his avant- garde history, rep wholly straightforward ideas, with dancers expressing emotions that are accessible to even the least dance- savvy eyes. Whether in same- sex or standard couplings (the distinction is always casually handled), the overriding sense, docu makes clear, is one of abiding loneliness, heightened by Taylor’s unembarrassed love of music — whether Bach’s “Musical Offering” or a potpourri of tango tunes from Astor Piazzola — from which he draws all inspiration. Helmer has done dance fans a real service by digging up archival footage of Taylor in his prime, as an ornery disciple of Martha Graham, and mixing it with backstage material and office- politics asides. Diamond also shines by showing performances from a proper distance, without the swirling camera movement and incessant cutting that usually ruin attempts to capture dance. And he avoids delving into his subject’s personal life, for once letting art be pure biography. Production. A Walter Scheuer production. Executive producer, Walter Scheuer.
